FRINGE VISION: To draw the theatre community together to connect, grow, share & celebrate

We aim to create a space that nurtures artists. To get the most out of the Nelson Fringe we recommend getting involved in as much of the week as you can. You'll get to meet other artists, forge pathways to collaboration, take part in workshops, showcase your work and celebrate the adventurous art that is being created at this time. It's a week of inspiration and creative upliftment! (aka... summer camp for adult performers, only in winter.)

Programme is Launched!!!

Our Fringe is a week-long gathering, everything takes place in two venues (The Refinery ArtSpace and Ghost Light Theatre) and we make it as easy as possible for you to enjoy your stay in sunny Nelson! See below for some of the things we can do for you...

  • Free accommodation (either with YHA or our billeting system)

  • Excellent venues at no cost to the artist, organised by the Festival Team

  • All marketing and promotion provided by Festival Team

  • A local Nelson business is appointed to "adopt" each show and promote your individual show to their own networks

  • Basic tech provided

  • $10 entry into each Fringe workshop

  • Invites to free special events

  • Ticketing services taken care of by the Festival Team (yay! Less responsibility!)

  • Free stand-by tickets to shows

  • Advice on getting funding for your trip

  • Photos of your Fringe performance

  • Eligibility for Fringe Awards

  • Refinery open from 12noon to late with free hot drinks and fruit in the chill-out zone

  • The opportunity to be paid to run a workshop (use the workshop submission form)

  • [Pending Festival Funding] We are hoping to pay groups a stipend for their showcase performances, this amount is not confirmed. Last year we were able to pay artists 29% of our total festival income.

ARTISTS' RESPONSIBILITIES

Get things which will help you before the Nelson Fringe:

Nelson Fringe Festival Site Specific Safety Plan (SSSP)

Please understand that the safety of our crew, artists and audiences is our first priority at all times.

This SSSP identifies hazards known to be present during the Nelson Fringe Festival timeline and prescribes methods to control, reduce or eliminate the risks they pose.

This is most relevant to the technical fit-up of our venues, artists shows, and the preparation of any area used by the public, cast or crew.

As a responsible fringe attendant, please take the time to have a quick look through to understand how we approach the various tasks that you may play a role in.

*  The Nelson Fringe will endeavour to programme ALL shows that apply to the Fringe, however, because we only operate in two venues (one more than the last 3 years!), slots are limited. If we are inundated with submissions, a selection process will take place at the discretion of The Fringe Director. Communication, clarity of ideas and timely registration will be the criteria considered. If you do not receive a slot, your submission fee is 100% refundable. If you cancel your show after 15 January, you lose your registration fee.

** Shows should typically be 55 min or less as 3+ shows perform each night and change-over must happen quickly between them.  Exceptions can be made on time limit in some cases. Each show will have one performance at the Nelson Fringe, as our shows are "showcases". If you wish to continue a season in Nelson/Tasman, we ask that you do so AFTER the close of the Festival dates. If you wish to have more guidance or info regarding this and venues available in the region, please contact the Fringe team.
